In 1903, Mrs. Jessie Reinhardt started a Sunday school and Women’s Guild in Dunlap Station, the present Rainier Beach area of Seattle, It was a rural town servicing the railroad which shipped logs to the mills on Elliott Bay. It was a prosperous time and land and buildings were acquired. The new church was dedicated by Bishop Frederic W. Keator on October 1, 1905. All Saints became a parish in 1916. However, the years of the Great Depression were devastating for the congregation and in 1931 All Saints again became a mission. When Rainier Avenue was extended, the church was left isolated on a side street and another difficult period began. The World War II years, however, brought many new people and the congregation again flourished. In 1951 the building was raised on jacks, and moved several blocks to its present location on Cloverdale Place South. The 1950s were years of growth and activity. In the 1960s major social changes began to take place. The social and demographic character of the area changed and economic conditions, particularly involving the Boeing Company, caused further decline. The concentration of public assistance housing, increasing crime and unemployment and few health care and public service facilities all had serious consequences for the neighborhood and for All Saints. The choice facing the congregation was to explore and develop urban ministry, or die.
All Saints' response was to become even more involved in the community and in the 1980s and 1990s, under the guidance of the Revs. Bill Bertolin and Pat Taylor, All Saints increased its participation in social justice and community development efforts. In recognition of this emphasis on social justice ministry, The Episcopal Church named All Saints a Jubilee Center in 2000.
All Saints has been served by 23 ordained clergy in its 107 years. Two priests, the Reverends Kate Kinney and Greg Peters served as co-vicars from 2003-2009. Their tenure modeled a way of ministry that was shared, cooperative and mutual.
Today’s vicar, the Rev. Carla Robinson is known throughout the diocese as a riveting and thought-provoking preacher, and is excited about helping All Saints in congregational development and education, as well as widening its presence in the community.
Over the years, All Saints members have been involved in many community groups including the South East Seattle Community Organization, the South East Seattle Senior Center, the South East Seattle Churches Association and a myriad of organizations and ministries of the Diocese of Olympia and The Episcopal Church. All Saints was the first church in all of Seattle to host Tent City. All Saints has also hosted the before and after school program of Empowering Youth and Family Outreach and participated as a SHARE Shelter for the homeless.
As All Saints’ membership increases it is in the process of developing new programs in education, music and youth ministry as well as special events such as its annual Salmon Bake. The congregation is socially and ethnically diverse and welcomes everyone with generosity and hospitality.
All Saints has a history of ups and downs. The good times have been received thankfully, in constant faith and without arrogance. The difficult times have moved the members to bold new decisions and ministries with renewed solidarity. Both are perceived as God’s blessing and provide for All Saints hope with confidence as witnessed in the Parish's Mission Statement:
“Almighty and ever-living God, we humbly beseech you to nurture and strengthen each of us, and this community, with your word and Holy Sacraments, so that through our mutual ministry, worship, fellowship, and hospitality, we may be faithful instruments of reconciliation, provide a haven for the hurting, and be catalysts for social, economic, and political justice; these things we ask through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior.”
